Water Features and Pool Accessories: Enhance Your Brisbane Pool Experience

Brisbane’s subtropical climate, with well over 280 sunny days a year and mild winters, means a pool here can offer far more than a few months of summer use. The right combination of water features, lighting, heating and automation can turn a standard backyard pool into a genuine resort-style retreat that’s usable for most of the year, easier to maintain, and far more enjoyable after dark.

As pool builders who design these elements into luxury pools across Brisbane, we’re often asked which upgrades are worth prioritising. Here’s a practical rundown of the main categories to consider.

Water Features: More Than Just a Visual Feature

Water features have moved well beyond decorative extras. Sheet waterfalls, vertical fountains, bubblers and sleek water walls all add a strong visual focal point, and most also earn their place functionally. A cascading feature keeps surface water moving, which helps filtration efficiency, and the sound of flowing water is genuinely effective at masking traffic or neighbourhood noise. Paired with lighting, a water feature also becomes a completely different experience after dark.

The main planning consideration is capacity. A dedicated water feature draws on your pump system, so it needs to be accounted for at the design stage, or your existing pump may need an upgrade to a variable-speed model to cope with the added demand. This is exactly the kind of detail we factor into the design process for every build, so the feature works with your system rather than straining it.

Pool Lighting: Extending Usability After Dark

Lighting is one of the highest-impact upgrades for a Brisbane pool, turning it from a daytime-only feature into a genuine evening entertainment space. LED lighting is now the clear standard over older halogen fittings, using significantly less energy and lasting many years longer, even though the upfront cost per fitting is higher.

Queensland has specific and evolving rules around pool electrical work. As of April 2025, pool lights and pumps are classified as prescribed electrical equipment under the state’s Electrical Safety Regulation, meaning all installation, repair or replacement work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. The Electrical Safety Office is the authoritative source on these requirements, and it’s worth checking before any pool lighting work begins, whether it’s a new installation or a retrofit on an existing pool.

Heating: Making the Most of Brisbane’s Climate

Brisbane pools are naturally swimmable for around eight months of the year, but heating can extend that season well into autumn and early spring. Three main options exist. Heat pumps offer the best all-round balance for the local climate, running far more efficiently than gas and coping well with Brisbane’s mild winters, though they heat more slowly. Solar heating is close to free to run and suits the shoulder seasons well, given how many sunny days the region gets, but it’s limited on cloudy days and needs decent north-facing roof space. Gas heating heats fastest but comes with the highest running costs, making it better suited to occasional use than year-round operation.

For most Brisbane homeowners, a heat pump paired with solar heating for the shoulder months tends to offer the strongest balance of cost and performance.

Automation: Control From Your Phone

Smart automation is one of the fastest-growing upgrades in Brisbane pool design, and it’s increasingly standard in new builds. App-based systems can control pump speed, lighting, heating schedules and water features remotely, while variable-speed pumps that only run when needed can meaningfully cut energy use. Many systems also include automated chemical dosing and real-time alerts for issues like low chemical levels or equipment faults, taking a lot of the guesswork out of day-to-day maintenance.

Safety Covers: A Non-Negotiable for Families

For families with young children or pets, a safety cover is one of the most important accessories available. Mesh covers allow rain through while blocking debris, solid covers block both debris and evaporation, and automatic roller systems offer the most convenience with motorised deployment. Beyond safety, a good cover also cuts cleaning time significantly, reduces evaporation, and can noticeably lower heating costs by retaining warmth overnight.

It’s worth noting that a cover alone does not satisfy Queensland’s pool barrier requirements. A compliant pool fence is still required regardless of what cover is fitted, a point we’ve covered in more detail in our guide to pool safety laws in Queensland.

Furniture and Everyday Maintenance

Comfortable, weather-resistant furniture rounds out a pool area and makes it a genuine outdoor living space rather than just somewhere to swim. Powder-coated aluminium, synthetic wicker and 316-grade stainless steel all hold up well to Brisbane’s humidity and UV exposure. On the maintenance side, a decent skimmer, pool brush and water testing kit cover the basics, while robotic cleaners and solar covers can meaningfully cut down on the time spent maintaining the pool week to week.

Bringing It All Together

None of these upgrades need to be tackled in isolation. The best results come from thinking about water features, lighting, heating and automation together at the design stage, so each system works with the others rather than being bolted on afterwards. If you’d like to see how these elements come together in a finished pool, our pool portfolio showcases a range of completed Brisbane projects with these features built in.
