For Brisbane and South East Queensland pools, porcelain is consistently the best-performing pool tile material – and the one most recommended by experienced pool builders. Its combination of very low water absorption, chemical resistance, UV stability and long-term durability makes it particularly well-suited to Queensland’s climate, where heat cycling, intense UV and pool chemistry put finishes under real stress year-round.
Porcelain’s low water absorption rate – typically below 0.5% – means it doesn’t take on moisture and expand in heat the way softer tiles can. This directly reduces the risk of cracking, lifting and grout failure over time. It also resists the degrading effects of chlorine and salt, maintains its colour and surface integrity with minimal maintenance, and is now available in large-format sizes and finishes that suit everything from a classic family pool to a contemporary luxury pool or infinity pool design.
That said, ‘best’ depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Glass mosaic tiles are the best choice for waterline feature bands and accent applications where colour depth and luminosity matter – no other material reflects and transmits light the way glass does, particularly with quality pool lighting behind it. Natural stone – travertine, bluestone and sandstone in particular – is a great choice where a warm, organic aesthetic is the priority, though it requires more maintenance than porcelain. Ceramic is a reliable and cost-effective option for straightforward builds where budget is the primary constraint.
For most Brisbane homeowners building a new concrete pool, porcelain and pebblecrete for the interior and surrounds – combined with glass or mosaic accents where a feature element is desired – represents the best overall outcome. It’s the combination that delivers on aesthetics, performance and long-term value.
